Biography

Early Life

Howard Leslie Shore was born on October 18, 1946 in Toronto , Canada.  He graduated from the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, and the continued his studies at Boston's Berklee College of Music. He played the horn for the rock group Lighthouse from 1969 - 1972.

Saturday Night Live

Howard Shore was one of the founders of Saturday Night Live. (SNL)  From 1975 until 1980, Shore served as the Musical Director.  He appeared in many musical sketches, including "Howard Shore and his All-Bee Band. Also in this skit were John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.  This skit was the spark behind "The Blues Brothers."  It was Shore who came up with the name.

David Cronenberg

Howard Shore began his film career with horror film director and actor David Cronenberg.  Shore has collaborated with Cronenberg on almost all of his films.

The Lord of the Rings

Howard Shore directed the music of THe Lord of the Rings.  He worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as with London Voices to create the recording.  All three movies' soundtracks have been released as CD's, and Mr. Shore continues to tour the worls with the pieces. 

King Kong

Howard Shore was originally to do the score for director Pter Jackson's film, King Kong.  He was later removed, citing personal disagreements with the movie's direction.

The Fly

Howard Shore composed his first opera, The Fly, based on a Cronenberg movie of thew same title.  It premiered in Paris on July 2, 2008.

Howard Shore also scored Philadelphia, The Last Mimzy, and Doubt.
